Months after its release, Avengers: Infinity War still has plenty of us thinking about its ending – a bold, powerful, universe-altering moment in the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe. But with plenty more story still to tell in the upcoming, still-untitled Avengers 4, there’s a lot to be wrapped up.
MCU head honcho Kevin Feige has always promised that the fourth Avengers would place a capper on everything that’s come before it, and it’s a point he’s reiterated in a new interview with the Toronto Sun. Using the original Star Wars trilogy as a comparison, Feige promises a ‘definitive ending’ at Phase 3.
“Storylines can come to an end,” he says. “The best stories do come to an end. Return Of The Jedi was an ending for a long time and as a 10-year-old in 1983 that carried me through 30 years until there was a sequel. That hasn’t happened before in the superhero genre. A new actor comes in and a new storyline starts right away. We wanted to do it this way because we think that the best stories have a definitive ending to a storyline. That’s certainly what’s going to happen next year with Avengers 4.”
Of course, the MCU will pick up post-Avengers 4 with Phase Four, with Spider-Man: Far From Home and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 3 already confirmed. But add Feige’s latest comments to the pile of evidence that the days of the classic Avengers line-up — including Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers — seem numbered.
